Our farm has always had animals. In the past, for our great grandparents, animals were useful for the food sustenance of the family, and for transport. The memoirs told between generations speak of a few animals but many species. There were some cows, rabbits, pigs, guinea fowl, hens, pigeons, horses and even donkeys. Grandmother always told of her beloved little donkey who pulled their cart.
Over the years we have converted some buildings of the farm that were used for breeding into lodgings for tourism, increasing the number of cows and maintaining the presence of hens and domestic animals. Developing the work following our passion, the Al Girasole farmhouse was born near the sea, immersed in the Tuscan Maremma, with animals, rooms, apartments and swimming pool. The pasture of our cows is located a few tens of meters from the garden of the farmhouse, in the background there are the hills of the Maremma park (Parco dell'uccellina) so one has the sensation of living integrated into the daily life of the countryside, alternating a dive or a reading to a caress to the calves. We have Chianina cows that we feed with our hays and flours derived from our threshing of barley, corn and legumes. Children but not only, are very fascinated by the tractors that are used for this job. In the late morning when we feed the animals, the bull recognizes the sound of the cart carrying the fresh grass and is the first to walk slowly and confidently from the pasture towards the mangers, followed by all the mares, with the calves jumping and they chase each other without straying too far. Anyone who hasn't already gone to the beach to get the best spot on the beach enjoys the show with a cup of coffee in hand, a few hours from their already completely forgotten city. It may happen to the lucky ones to witness the birth of one or more calves, beings of indescribable sweetness. Then in the evening, once the car is parked after a walk and an ice cream in Orbetello, the starry sky free of light pollution shows itself in all its splendour, the cows doze ruminating in the pasture, the typical white mantle of the Chianina shines under the moon, a contemplative gaze to prepare for the restorative sleep of the summer holidays in Maremma.
